Turning Shipra River Water into Pure Desi Ghee at Kainchi
शिप्रा नदी के जल को शुद्ध देशी घी में परिवर्तित करना
The divine culinary miracle that saved the sacred Bhandara feast at Kainchi Dham
In the foundational years of Kainchi Dham, during an auspicious festival when thousands of pilgrims had arrived from distant valleys, the ashram kitchen was bustling with continuous cooking. Enormous iron woks (kadhais) were set up over open wood fires to fry puris and prepare halwa for the bhandara.
Late in the afternoon, the chief cook rushed to Maharaj Ji in deep panic: "Maharaj! The supply of pure desi ghee has run completely out, and hundreds of hungry devotees are still standing in line across the valley! What will we feed them? It will take hours to get ghee from Bhowali market."
Maharaj Ji frowned gently and scolded the cook with deep affection: "Why do you worry so much? Go down to Mother Shipra with two empty tins. Take water from the flowing river, chant the name of Hanuman Ji, and pour it into the hot kadhai. But remember: whatever you take from the river must be returned in full!"
Bewildered yet obedient, two ashram sevadars carried large 15-liter metal canisters down the stone steps to the Shipra river, filled them with cold river water, and brought them to the blazing kitchen hearth.
With trembling hands, the cooks poured the water into the piping hot woks. The moment the water touched the heated iron surface, it did not splatter or hiss into steam—instead, an intoxicating aroma of freshly churned desi ghee filled the kitchen! The liquid turned into rich, golden, foaming ghee.
The cooks fried hundreds of hot, fragrant puris, feeding every pilgrim until everyone was completely satisfied. The very next morning, when fresh tins of ghee arrived from the market, Maharaj Ji instructed the cooks: "Go now! Return the two canisters of pure ghee back to Mother Shipra. What belongs to nature must never be hoarded."
The devotees obediently poured two tins of fresh market ghee into the flowing river, completing the divine cycle of gratitude and reverence for nature.
"Feed everyone. When you feed a hungry person, you are feeding God himself."

The Teaching Behind the Leela
Faith in the divine transcends material limitations. The miracle was not an exhibition of wizardry, but a manifestation of Maharaj Ji’s compassion to ensure no hungry soul left the ashram unfed, coupled with an ecological lesson in returning to nature what is borrowed.
