Neem Karoli Baba Maharaj Ji
“The best service you can do is to keep your thoughts on God. Love everyone. Feed everyone. Remember God. Tell the truth.”
Life of Maharaj Ji
Born into a wealthy Brahmin family in the village of Akbarpur, Firozabad district, Uttar Pradesh, Maharaj Ji was named Lakshmi Narayan Sharma. Drawn to intense spiritual asceticism from early childhood, he left his worldly home in his youth and wandered bare-foot across the forests and pilgrim trails of northern India.
In his early wandering years, he was known under various names including Lakshman Das, Handi Wallah Baba, and Tikonia Baba. The name Neem Karoli Baba (or Neeb Karori Baba) became associated with him after a famous railway episode at the Neeb Karori village station, where a train refused to move until the humble saint was treated with reverence.
Maharaj Ji never sat on a pedestal, never charged money, never delivered formal lectures, and rejected any display of ostentation. Draped usually in a simple red-and-black plaid blanket, he reclined on a wooden takhat, feeding everyone who visited and whispering pearls of divine wisdom in the simplest colloquial words.
The Four Essential Teachings
Love Everyone (सबको प्रेम करो)
See the divine presence in every being without distinction of caste, religion, wealth, or nationality.
Serve Everyone (सबकी सेवा करो)
True spirituality is expressed through feeding the hungry, tending to the suffering, and giving with an open heart.
Remember God (भगवान को याद रखो)
Constant remembrance through repeating Ram-Nam, chanting the Hanuman Chalisa, and living with devotion in every moment.
Tell the Truth (सत्य बोलो)
Total integrity and authenticity in thought, speech, and conduct. Truth connects the soul directly to the divine.
The Global Journey to Kainchi Dham
In 1974, a young Steve Jobs travelled to India seeking spiritual awakening and intended to meet Neem Karoli Baba, only to find that Maharaj Ji had attained Mahasamadhi in September 1973. Nonetheless, spending time at Kainchi Dham profoundly shaped Jobs’s intuitive vision and life philosophy.
Decades later, Jobs famously advised Mark Zuckerberg to visit Kainchi Dham during Facebook's early testing days to reconnect with the company's core mission of connecting humanity. Seeker after seeker has found unexpected renewal in the calm breeze of this sacred valley.
