About Maa Naina Devi Temple

Maa Naina Devi Temple is one of the most revered Hindu pilgrimage shrines in Northern India, perched serenely on the northern bank of the eye-shaped Naini Lake in Mallital, Nainital. Revered as one of the 51 sacred Shakti Peethas of Goddess Durga, this ancient temple is the spiritual heartbeat of the entire Kumaon region. ### The Sacred Shakti Peetha Legend According to sacred Vedic lore found in the Shiva Purana and Kalika Purana, after Goddess Sati immolated herself in the sacrificial fire of her father King Daksha's yajna, grief-stricken Lord Shiva performed the celestial dance of destruction (Tandava) carrying her mortal remains. To restore universal balance, Lord Vishnu dispatched the Sudarshana Chakra to divide Sati's body into 51 sanctified pieces. The left eye (in Sanskrit, 'Naina') of the divine Mother fell precisely at this spot, sanctifying the ground and creating the sacred waters of the lake, which took the shape of an eye and became known as 'Nainital' (The Lake of the Eye). ### Temple Architecture & Presiding Deities The main sanctum of the temple houses two golden eyes representing Goddess Naina Devi, flanked by idols of Goddess Kali on the left and Lord Ganesha on the right. An ancient, sprawling Peepal tree stands protectively within the inner courtyard, under which devotees tie sacred red mauli threads while making heartfelt vows. Within the spacious temple complex, secondary shrines honor Lord Hanuman, Lord Shiva (with a sacred Shivalinga), and Navagrahas (the nine celestial planetary deities). ### The Grand Nanda Devi Mahotsav Every year during the auspicious Shukla Ashtami of the Bhadrapada month (typically September), the temple complex hosts the celebrated Nanda Devi Mela. Devotees craft statues of Goddess Nanda and Sunanda out of sacred banana trunks (Kela ke stambha), conduct elaborate tantric and Vedic rituals, and lead a magnificent procession that immerses the idols into Naini Lake amid the blowing of traditional Ranasingha horns and Pahadi drums. ### Visitor Timings & Rituals - **Temple Gates Open:** 5:00 AM (Summer) / 6:00 AM (Winter) - **Morning Mangala Aarti:** 6:30 AM - **Evening Sandhya Aarti:** 7:00 PM (Summer) / 6:30 PM (Winter) - **Gate Closing:** 9:00 PM - **Special Offerings:** Devotees traditionally offer red chunri, fresh coconuts, marigold garlands, and traditional sweet pedas to the Goddess.
