About Kainchi Dham Ashram & Temple

Kainchi Dham is a sacred Himalayan hermitage and temple complex nestled amidst lush green pine and deodar forests along the banks of the murmuring Shipra River in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand. Established in 1964 by the divine saint Shri Neem Karoli Baba (lovingly called 'Maharaj Ji'), the ashram has grown from a humble forest meditation spot into one of the world's most sought-after spiritual sanctuaries. ### The Sacred Genesis of Kainchi Dham In 1962, Maharaj Ji, accompanied by his close devotee Shri Poornanand Ji of Bhowali, rested near the two sharp hairpin bends resembling a pair of scissors (in Hindi, 'Kainchi'). Recognizing the spiritual vibrations of the sacred confluence where sage Kashyap and ancient rishis had meditated, Maharaj Ji instructed the construction of a platform around a local cave. On June 15, 1964, the first temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman was consecrated with a grand feast (Bhandara). Over subsequent years, beautifully sculpted shrines honoring Lord Shiva, Goddess Vaishno Devi, and Goddess Durga were sanctified. ### The Spiritual Heart: Maharaj Ji's Kutir & Mahasamadhi The sanctum sanctorum of Kainchi Dham holds the sacred Kutir where Baba Maharaj Ji rested during his visits. Pilgrims can darshan Maharaj Ji's wooden cot (Takht), his iconic warm blanket, and pristine portraits that radiate immense tranquility. Adjacent to the main courtyard stands the Mahasamadhi Temple, consecrated following Maharaj Ji's physical departure in 1973. Devotees sit quietly in this sanctum for hours, immersing themselves in silent prayer and meditation. ### Daily Ashram Schedule & Aarti Timings - **Morning Gate Opening:** 6:30 AM (Summer) / 7:00 AM (Winter) - **Morning Kakad Aarti:** 7:00 AM – 7:30 AM - **Temple Darshan:** 7:30 AM – 12:00 PM - **Afternoon Rest Period:** The sanctum doors remain closed between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. - **Afternoon Darshan:** 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM - **Evening Sandhya Aarti:** 6:00 PM – 6:45 PM (time adjusts with sunset) - **Night Gate Closing:** 7:00 PM (Winter) / 7:30 PM (Summer) ### Sacred Etiquette & Pilgrim Code of Conduct 1. **Footwear & Belongings:** Remove all footwear at the free Joota Ghar located on the roadside before walking across the pedestrian suspension bridge over the Shipra River. 2. **Photography Restrictions:** Photography, videography, and mobile phone usage are strictly prohibited inside the temple sanctum, shrines, and Baba's Kutir to maintain spiritual dignity. 3. **Modest Attire:** Visitors must dress conservatively.
