About Bhimtal Lake & Island Aquarium

Bhimtal Lake is the largest and most pristine body of water in the Kumaon Lake District, situated at an altitude of 1,370 meters (4,495 feet) in the town of Bhimtal, approximately 21 km from Kainchi Dham. Unlike the lively tourist hum of Nainital, Bhimtal retains an old-world, peaceful Himalayan village atmosphere characterized by terraced hills, pine-covered banks, and placid jade-colored waters. ### Mythological Lore: The Footprint of Bhima Bhimtal is steeped in Mahabharata mythology. According to local lore, during the Pandavas' exile (Agyatvas) in the Himalayan foothills, the mighty Pandava brother Bhima struck the earth with his heavy mace (Gada) to produce a fresh water spring when his family was thirsting in the wilderness. On the lake's southern shore stands the sacred 17th-century Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple, constructed by King Baz Bahadur of the Chand dynasty on the exact spot where Bhima performed intense penance to Lord Shiva. ### The Iconic Central Island & Aquarium The most distinguishing feature of Bhimtal is a lush, natural emerald island situated right in the center of the lake, about 91 meters from the shore. Originally functioning as a British rest pavilion, the island now houses an enchanting public freshwater aquarium and restaurant managed in harmony with nature. Visitors board traditional rowboats or motorized ferries to reach the island, where glass tanks display rare fish species brought from Mexico, South Africa, and Southeast Asia. ### The Historic Masonry Dam (1883) At the southern outlet of the lake lies a picturesque Victorian masonry dam constructed in 1883 by the British Public Works Department. Spanning 150 meters, the dam regulates water for irrigation across the lower Bhabar plains and features a beautiful floral garden promenade overlooking the cascading spillway. ### Boating, Water Sports & Lakeside Cafes Because Bhimtal Lake spans over 48 hectares, it offers significantly more open water space than Nainital. Visitors can enjoy kayaking, paddle boating, water zorbing, and quiet angling (with forest permits). The lakeshore is dotted with boutique cafes serving fresh organic Arabica coffee, Italian pizzas, and authentic Pahadi cuisine overlooking the water.

Things to Do & Highlights

• Take a leisurely boat ride to the central island and explore the freshwater aquarium. • Visit the 17th-century Bhimeshwar Mahadev Temple to witness ancient Kumaoni stone carvings. • Experience kayaking or paddle-boating across the expansive, uncrowded open waters. • Enjoy sunset tea at lakeside open-air cafes as migratory birds flutter across the water. • Take a short 4 km excursion to adjacent Sattal (Seven interconnected lakes) for birdwatching and pine forest trails.

How to Reach

• Distance from Kainchi Dham: 21 km south via Bhowali (approx. 45 minutes by car). • Distance from Kathgodam Railway Station: 22 km northeast via Ranibagh (approx. 40 minutes). • Direct private taxis and shared jeeps connect Bhimtal with Bhowali and Haldwani throughout the day.

Travel & Visitor Tips

• Less Crowded Alternative: On peak summer and festival weekends when Nainital faces entry restrictions, Bhimtal is the best serene base to stay. • Best Time to Visit: March to June for pleasant weather; September to November for crystal-clear skies and crisp Himalayan breezes. • Parking: Plentiful municipal parking is available along the lake promenade and near the dam.
